From Idea to Action and Impact: Mobilizing the outcomes of the Summit of the Future

WAAS is a member of a consortium that organized a Summit of the Future Side Event at the UN on Sept 21, 2024. The high-level side event clarified specific proposals from the Wales Protocol for Future Generations, with a view to showcasing how these can be implemented to realize the ambitions of the Summit of the Future’s Declaration on Future Generations. The event showcased specific exemplars that demonstrate how these proposals are being implemented in practice already in many cases, and how these exemplars can be extended more widely in community, member state and international contexts for wider impact.
The event was hosted by Steven Hartman, Founding Executive Director of the UNESCOMOST BRIDGES Sustainability Science Coalition, with a keynote by Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO. It included a presentation by Garry Jacobs on the Academy’s strategy for harnessing the power of generative AI to address the global shortage of capacity in higher education, to promote interactive, personalized, customized pedagogy in all major languages, to increase access and affordability, and provide a universal platform for life-long learning. The event also included presentations by Peter Schlosser on virtual learning systems developed at the Global Futures Lab, ASU, and Mamphela Ramphele on youth leadership and intergenerational dialogues. The recording of the event can be found here.
