WAAS President and several Fellows participated at the special session entitled “From particle physics to sustainable world: Celebrating the achievements of Ivo Šlaus” at the 16th SDEWES conference, which was held on 10-15 October 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia and online. The conference brought together around 630 scientists, researchers, and experts in the field of sustainable development from 58 countries holding 675 oral presentations, 13 special sessions and several side events, 7 invited lectures and 1 panel given by some of the most distinguished experts in the field. The special session “From particle physics to sustainable world: Celebrating the achievements of Ivo Šlaus” was devoted to finding solutions to the most pressing contemporary global interconnected crises of epidemics, economy, environment, society and institutions. WAAS President Garry Jacobs presented an excellent overview of the current challenges and possible solutions. WAAS Honorary President Ivo Šlaus shared some inspiring opportunities for transforming our world including the proposal to eliminate wars from future conflicts. WAAS Fellows Uroš Cvelbar, Neven Duić and Aleksander Zidanšek presented interesting opportunities from different fields of sustainability. Lively debate at this special session provided some actionable proposals for smarter knowledge-based solutions to current global challenges, in particular the challenges of climate change, environmental protection and the future of democracy.
