The South East European Division of WAAS was formally established in November 2005 on the occasion of the World Academy's General Assembly held at Zagreb, Croatia. Ivo Šlaus is Director of SEED. In 2007, SEED proposed a triple helix approach -- Government, Education and Business -- to eradicate unemployment in Croatia and make the country a model for the rest of the region. At a meeting in Zagreb on April 18-19, SEED Delegates from most countries presented a detailed strategy for achieving full employment in the region. It was a call for declaration of SE Europe as a nuclear free zone with guarantees for peace and security under the umbrella of NATO. SEED was one of the organisers of the international conference Europe after Lisbon: Intertwining Sustainability and Competitiveness in co-operation with the Slovenian EU Presidency. The conference was held at Ljubljana, April 25-26, 2008 and discussed the long-term aspects of competition and competitiveness in achieving sustainable development on the European and the global scale. The conference also discussed successes and challenges of the Lisbon strategy and the concept of competition in promoting innovation for sustainable development of Europe and convert this vision into practical steps, in particular regarding its development paradigm after Lisbon. |
